Bregar con Mierda

Vas a volver a bregar con mierda.

A esta edad avanzada, a punto de los 77, conmemorando un año de sobrevivencia tras un infarto y 3 baipases, me decidí por la compañía de otro animal en la casa. A estas alturas no estoy para determinaciones impetuosas, por lo que me documenté razonablemente sobre las razas y sus características y cuales se adaptan mejor a mis condiciones.

Tengo gratos recueros de la adolescencia con un Bóxer y  esta Boston Terrier es de similar apariencia, más pequeña y manejable. Parte de los motivos para su presencia es que me saque de mi cueva. Delicada decisión que me ha tomado muchos años. Respondo al ejemplo de mis hijos, que han mostrado la dedicación de disfrutar las alegrías y sinsabores al completar una familia con un can.

Recibí las advertencias y se me hicieron claros los requerimientos; la atención, el tiempo que requieren y las limitaciones en movilidad. De todas, la más resonante fue la de mi hijo menor (rescatador con su enamorada de Luna, una perra callejera): Vas a volver a bregar con mierda 40 años después.

Y yo me he dado a reflexionar que es eso bregar con mierda. Según el maestro Arcadio Díaz Quiñonez, bregar para los Boricuas: “describe la lucha diaria y constante que enfrentan las personas para sobrevivir, prosperar y enfrentar los desafíos de la vida.” Bregar con mierda es una de esas luchas cotidianas que nunca nos abandonan. Tan importante es la mierda que tiene sentido literal y figurativo.

La mierda es excremento, desecho, porquería, kk, fó. Agravios a los sentidos y motivo de repulsión.  Bregar literalmente con mierda es limpiar la kaka, sonreír y mirar la perrita a los ojos con palabras tiernas; de que hay lugares específicos mejores que ir donde le de la gana. Como padre disciplinario, al momento soy un desastre.

Bregar con mierda figurativamente lo asocio con eso de que traten a uno como bolsa que se lleva a la basura. Pero hay distintos gradientes y diversos escenarios en los que nos toca bregar con mierda. Su llegada puede ser como un diluvio, los mojones gigantescos, o puede ser insistente y pertinaz, del mismo modo que hay mierditas.

El escenario mas inmediato en el que brego con mierda es el espacio intimo, esta vida interior en que no todo puede ser como quisiera. Y ahora tengo una perra arisca y desobediente. Claro que salir a la calle es ponerse a riesgo de bregar con mierda, agravado por este verano en que el calor va de abrazador a infernal. No quisiera pensar en tráfico y congestiones, accidentes pero Dios bendiga los aires acondicionados. Es mayor el riesgo de toparse con gente áspera y estridente, esas que se atienden con desagrado: las mierditas.

Bregar con la mierda social y afectiva es ser objeto de subestimación y menosprecio. Es la indiferencia, e inequidad en el trato. Bregar con mierda es atender excesivas quejas, e incesante inconformidad, es la obsesión de mantener control y relevancia. Bregar con mierda es encarar la apatía, la indiferencia y el mal agradecimiento.

Bregar con mierda es afrontar las consecuencias de los servicios en el país, particularmente los de salud, en que una primera cita o de seguimiento comienzan por lo menos en dos meses de espera. Y las esperas en consultorios y oficinas de gobierno son un desafío al ingenio y la paciencia.

En la Isla del Encanto bregamos con una inflación asfixiante.

En la Isla del Encanto bregamos con una inflación asfixiante, particularmente en los precios de la comida en el mercado y los restaurantes que con frecuencia carecen de suficiente servicio. Mensualmente hay que bregar con la cuenta creciente de la electricidad, el agua y las comunicaciones.

Y aquí, por lo bajito se reparte la patria, se regala  exenciones contributivas y se procura la inversión para aburguesar el país con la asistencia de los Uber, scooters y airbnb. Pero ahí la llevo, ahora tengo una perrita y esa mierda real con que bregar como parte del programa.

José Montoya is a renowned poet, artist and activist who has been in the forefront of the Chicano art movement.
