This month’s Chicano Music Chronicles features renowned musician, performer and singer Steve Salas, co-founder of the legendary Eastside band, Tierra. Steve Salas was born and raised in Lincoln Heights, a humble and modest working class community in the northeast section of Los Angeles, California. At a very young age, Steve knew his calling… He took center stage at family functions singing Rancheras (old Mexican ballads) to the delight of friends and family…
Along with an older brother Rudy, Steve honed his vocal skills and began playing with R&B bands throughout his teenage years. By the time he was in high school, Steve had recorded a string of regional hit singles with groups such as The Jaguars, and with his brother Rudy as The Salas Brothers. But Steve is best known as the singing lead for the Eastside band Tierra. His lyrical voice appears on such Tierra hits as Tierra and the group’s largest blockbuster hit, “Together.”
Check out Mark Guerrero’s insightful interview with Steve Salas, as they review the talented singer’s long career. Tune in to the Chicano radio Network every night in April at 7PM to hear this riveting interview.
