Bienvenidos otra vez a La Voz Newspaper! In this issue of La Voz you will find a number of interesting
stories and news items.
Let us call to your attention our feature story on El Cinco de Mayo. Most people will tell you the
Cinco de Mayo is about the Mexican defeat of the French troops in the City of Puebla in 1862.
But in our view, the Cinco de Mayo had a far greater impact than that because the
Mexicanos continued to battle the French and prevented them from assisting the Confederate
South from winning the Civil War. Had the Mexicanos not tied up the French, the outcome
of the Civil War in the United States might have turned out very differently.
And it is for this that the African American community should also join in on the celebration of El
Cinco de Mayo.
Cambiando de temas In this issue of La Voz you will also find the complete schedule of this year’s
Tejano Conjunto Festival. This year marks the 38th year of this event and a big congratulations
goes out to Juan Tejeda for helping to make this event possible. As a community activist he will
go down in history for his many accomplishments in moving our Raza forward.
Cambiando de tema. People often ask me how is the newspaper business going? My response is, I
don’t really know. I am not in the newspaper business. After they give me a brief pause of perplexity, I go on
to explain that I am in the inspiration business. Because we are a monthly publication, I can’t compete
with daily newspapers or social media in the delivery of the news. But what I can do is find stories about
people that more people need to hear about. Many times these stories are about overcoming adversity.
It is these kinds of stories that inspire people to keep trying and never give up. These are the kinds of
stories that our readers have told me over the last 29 years that they want to read about.
Asi es que, if you know of someone who has surprised you with their accomplishments, dejanos
saber and we will be happy to share it with others. More people need to learn and
understand that the secret to success is never giving up.
