Carlos Sandoval is co-producer of the award winning documentary “A Class Apart.” In the 1950s Mexican Americans were blatantly discriminated against and often lynched. The 14 Amendment which provided “equal protection under the law” for African Americans did not protect Mexican Americans because they were considered white and already protected. In the case of Hernandez vs Texas, attorneys Gus Garcia and Carlos Cadena argued before the Supreme Court that Mexican Americans deserved protection under the 14th Amendment because they were “a class apart.”
