In 1940, the first generation of bilingual, bi-cultural Mexican American youth found themselves living as second-class citizens in the United States. They responded by creating a vibrant counter-culture with their own unique dress, mannerisms and language. They called themselves Pachucos and they spoke in a unique fusion of Spanish and English which they called caló.
