The 1969 Denver Youth Conference attracted more than 1500 Mexican American and Puerto Rican youth from throughout the United States to discuss an ideological framework for the incipient Chicano Movement. One of the sidebar caucuses convened was the Women’s Caucus to address gender inequality in the Chicano Movement. Betita Martinez, community organizer and publisher of the El Grito del Norte newspaper attended. Here she recalls the surprising and shocking outcome of the debate on the role of women in the Movement.
