Following the conclusion of the Spanish American War in 1898, the island of Puerto Rico became a colony of the United States. Soon nationalists like Luis Muñoz Marin and Pedro Albizu Campos were arguing that Puerto Rico should become its own independent nation. In 1937, a rally by nationalists to celebrate the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico resulted in one of the most horrible attacks on unarmed civilians in Puerto Rican history.
