Renowned labor leader and President of the United Farm Workers Union César Chávez died on April 23, 1993. On April 29th, more than 50,000 people attended his funeral in Delano, California. This was the largest funeral of any labor leader in the history of the United States. Chicano producer Moctesuma Esparza invited film directors Greg Nava, Rey Villaobos, Edward James Olmos and Jesús Treviño to lend their talents to document the funeral. Within a matter of hours six film crews were organized and they filmed the entire funeral from dawn to dusk. This photo of the tent area where the casket was on display was taken by Jesús Treviño on the afternoon of the funeral. César’s casket is on the left of frame.
