A MOMENT IN TIME
A Meeting of Scholars. In October of 1982, a number of Chicano scholars attended a conference at the University of Texas at Austin. Following the conference, Sociologist Dr. Gilbert Cardenas suggested that the scholars retire to his home to continue their conversations. Once gathered at Gilbert’s home, anthropologist Dr. José Limón took inventory of the rare confluence of such distinguished scholars. He said to Gilbert. “Look around you, look who’s in this room. You should get your camera.” Gilbert recalls that this was before digital cameras and that he only had one more shot left in his roll of film camera. But he used that shot wisely and took this historic photo. From left to right, the photo shows Dr. Ricardo Romo, historian who would later become the President of UT San Antonio, Dr. Tomás Rivera, then Chancellor at the University of California at Riverside, in the back row, Anthropologist Dr. José Limón and Historian Dr. Juan Gómez Quiñonez, in the middle row, legendary folklorist and scholar Américo Paredes, author and professor Dr. Rolando Hinojosa Smith and author and professor Dr. Luis Leal. And in the front row, Dr. Arturo Madrid, professor of literature and the humanities and Dr. Carlos Arce. A grouping of the most celebrated minds of their generation in a historic Moment in Time.
