On Tuesday, August 9, the primary elections in Puerto Rico were disrupted when sixty percent of the ballots failed to reach the voting sites. The disarray caused by foul ups in the voting process caused candidates from the two major opposing parties, the statehood-oriented New Progressive Party and the older Popular Democratic Party which stands for continued status as a territory of the United States, to demand redress from Puerto Rico’s Supreme Court. In this Latinopia Plática, José M. Umpierre, who resides in San Juan, Puerto Rico, spoke about the voting fiasco.
