This summer VPAM will host the large-scale sculptural installation of Los Angeles-based artist Carmen Argote. A few years ago as part of a two-part artwork, the entire wall-to-wall carpeting of Argote’s childhood home, a 720-square-foot dwelling in the Pico Union area of Los Angeles, was lovingly painted, carefully documented in situ, and finally excised from its environment. The resulting exhibition, 720 sq. ft.: Shape Seeps Through, explores residual spatial memory and the impact it has had on the artist. Now extracted and inserted into a conceptual context, the carpet transcends its functionality and serves as a dynamic visual element that both metaphorically and literally uncovers the interconnectedness of space and memory.

Together these stories, researched and collected by current residents of San Juan Bautista, were woven into an epic tapestry that unfolded as a paean to the rise, fall and constant rebirth of a small town in all its multicultural glory. CANCIÓN DE SAN JUAN: ORATORIO OF A MISSION TOWN explored the many transformations experienced by the people of this region – and their perseverance, resilience and stubborn refusal to cease existing in the face of overwhelming odds. HISTORY OF THE
CHILEAN ARPILLERAS
THROUGH JANUARY 2014
NATIONAL HISPANIC CULTURAL CENTER
ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO
INFO: http://www.nationalhispaniccenter.org
Nearly forty years ago, the armed forces of Chile overthrew the administration of Salvador Allende. That day, September 11, 1973 created the necessary conditions in which this art form known as arpilleras was born and soon these textiles became the most visual (and visible), poignant, and widespread manifestation of opposition to authoritarianism, violation of human rights, the disappearance of loved ones-all things associated with the military government that ruled Chile until 1990.
Arpilleras are a powerful art form- so much more than a “charming” or quaint applique. Layers of sackcloth or burlap fabric (arpillera) were joined, principally through applique, to create multi-dimensional (in layers and meaning) works of protest and resistance. Based on the collection of poet and Wellesley College professor Marjorie Agosín, the exhibition, Stitching Resistance: The History of Chilean Arpilleras is a result of an intense collaboration by poets, artists, scholars, and curators. It includes a total of 74 works by a variety of arpilleristas (makers of arpilleras) and workshops.
