In the cosmology of the Aztecs, the sun was known as Tonatiuh. The Aztecs believed that every 52 years, the sun expired only to be reborn again and replenish life with a new era of prosperity. The Aztec “Fire Dance” celebrates this renewal of life with a symbolic sacrifice of the principal dancer to the sun’s flames, here performed by master Aztec dancer Jaime Ayala and the Nahua Ollin dance company
