San Antonio playwright Gregg Barrios discovered that the character of Stanley Kowalski in the classic American play, “A Streetcar Named Desire,” was based on author Tennessee Williams’ relationship with a Mexican American lover named Pancho Rodríguez. In spite of much scholarship on Tennessee Williams and his works, few people knew about this hidden romance and its impact. Gregg set out to write a play about this relationship titled “Rancho Pancho” based on letters that Pancho Rodríguez wrote to his brother and to Tennessee Williams during their two-year romance.
