In this episode of Mark Guerrero’s East Los Angeles Stories, Mark visits with Fred Rivera, bassist with East L.A. bands The Saints, Eddie James (aka Edward James Olmos) & the Pacific Ocean, and Genesis (not the English band) in the early to mid-60s. After being drafted, he went to Vietnam where he spent a significant time in the jungle in combat and some time playing in a rock band touring danger zones the the USO didn’t venture into. When he returned to the U.S. he played with major artist such as Delaney Bramlett and Oliver. Fred wrote a phenomenal book, which was nominated for a Pulitzer prize, about his experiences in Vietnam and beyond, “Raw Man,” first published in 2014.Check out this fascinating interview.
