THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: JOSÉ UMPIERRE – “DE ACA Y DE ALLA,” ALVARO HUERTA “WE NEED A CLEAN DACA BILL, NOW!” BANCARROTA, TRAILER2 FOR THE SEARING DOCUMENTARY AND MOMENT IN TIME: REIES LÓPEZ TIJERINA MEETS ERNESTO GALARZA.
Hola Latinopians! I know you’re all exhausted from this week-end’s Women’s March but we must move on. We have a whole year to hammer away at Trump and his pendejadas. This week on Latinopia our regular contributor José Umpierre returns with his Burundanga Boricua column, this time he looks at where the Puerto Rican people are at 110 days after the hurricanes. As Umpierre points out, one fact remains, the island and it’s people are resourceful in the face of adversity and from that strength will come come the creativity for the future. Check out his pesao pensamientos.
Also this week, Dr. Alvaro Huerta weighs in on the current government shutdown and the key issue that is keeping the government close– the lack of attention to a badly needed DACA bill. Huerta explains what’s needed and who should be leading the charge.
Also this week, we post the second in our three trailers for the epic documentary on the Puerto Rican debt crisis, Bancarrota. These three trailers really help explain the situation and are not to be missed.
And this week we revisit a classic historic photo of two Chicano luminary leaders, Land Grant activist Reies López Tijerina (1926-2015) and labor activist and scholar Dr. Ernesto Galarza (1905 -1984). Both men were pioneers in their fields and left an indelible mark on Latino history. Check out this historic photo and ask yourself what were they talking about?
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
