THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: LUIS TORRES ON FIDEL AND CUBA, JULIE CARMEN’S YOGA TALK, SIHASIN PERFORMS “THEY CAN’T HOLD YOU DOWN,” ERNIE HOGAN ON BEING IRISH-MEXICAN, IRISH SODA BREAD RECIPE, THE SAN PATRICIOS, CHICANO IRISH WAYNE HEALY, SERGIO HERNANDEZ ON A DESPICABLE ACT, AND ANGELA’S PHOTO OF THE WEEK.
We we got a lot for you this week on Latinopia. We celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a blog by Irish Mexican science fiction author Ermie Hogan talking about being Irish Mexican. The affinity between the Irish and the Mexicans is not new, it goes back more than 160 years to the Mexican American War when a battalion of Irish conscripts into the U.S. Army deserted and opted to fight on the Mexican side of the war. Check out the clip from Mark Day’s documentary on the San Patricio Brigade. And check out Chicano Irish muralist Wayne Healy in His Own Words. The Irish Mexican connection comes to a flavorful conclusion with the recipe for Irish Jalapeno Soda Bread–the best of two cultures!
Luis Torres visited Cuba in 1982 and met Fidel Castro. In this week’s Tales of Torres blog, he recounts his impressions and the new opening in US Cuban relations. Julie Carmen returns with her Yoga Talk blog focuses this week on how to modify a standing twist position. Sergio Hernández opines on the recent letter sent by the Republicans to undercut President Obama’s negotiations with Iran. And Angela Oriz has a fascinating photo for us, “Movement.”
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
