Hola mis queridos Latinopianos! Your Tia Tenopia here with another week of Latinopia. The burning news this week was the announcement by Puerto Rico’s Governor Alejandro García Padilla that the island will be unable to pay its $72 billion dollar debt. Our San Juan blogger José Umpierre weighs in with an insightful blog in both Spanish and English. This is pesao stuff, so be sure to read it!
Our videos this week are in Cinema and Teatro. We thought we’d celebrate the recent historic decision by the Supreme Court on gay marriage by posting a clip from Dan Guerrero’s play Gaytino. And also check out actor Richard Yñiguez reflecting on his role in the motion picture Raíces de Sangre (Roots of Blood). Written and directed by Jesús Salvador Treviño the film is considered a classic of Chicano Cinema. Don’t miss these two videos.
We’re also adding this week a new Latinopia Biography, this one of Puerto Rican Ramón Emeterio Betances, considered “The Father of the Puerto RicaN Nation.” Also check out his Ten Commandments of Free Men in our Latinopia Documents. This document was ahead of its time calling for the end to slavery, freedom of speech and press and for an independent Puerto Rican nation.
Also this week, cartoonist Sergio Hernández weighs in on the recent Donald Trump flap. And don’t miss another wonderful photo of Angela Ortiz, this week “Calla Lilies.”
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
