THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: ENCUENTRO 2014, A LATINO THEATER EPIC, DON FELIPE SEARCHES FOR AMERICA, ELIZABETH PEÑA REMEMBERED, VETERANS WE RECALL, LAX AND MORE.
What up my rockin’ Latinopian locos and locas! Your Tia Tenopia here once more bringing you a rollicking week of Latinopia. And, orale, lots going on this week!
ENCUENTRO 2014. For the past month, the Los Angeles Theater Center has been hosting more than 150 actors, directors and theater people in the biggest get-together of Latino theater souls in more than 30 years! The month-long “Encuentro” (Meeting) involves more than 19 different theater companies from around the United States and showcases the best of Latino theater in America. This week we visit with José Luis Valenzuela, director of the Los Angeles Theater Center, as he explains what Encuentro 2014 is all about. In future weeks Latinopia will profile many of the Latino theater groups participating in this historic event as well as showcasing some of their plays. Enjoy this week’s video and stay tuned for more!
DON FELÍPE DE ORTEGO returns this week with his blog, Bravo Road with Don Felípe. In this blog Don Felipe explores just how Latino writers have been marginalized from the “canon” of what is supposed to be American literature. Why are so many important Latino writers excluded from what is considered “American” Literature? Que no somos Americanos?
ELIZABETH PEÑA. This week-end, family and friend of the gifted actress Elizabeth Peña, who passed away on October 14, 2013, gathered to pay homage to her memory and legacy. Latinopia remembers Elizabeth by posting memories of her friends and colleagues from the hit TV series, Resurrection Blvd.
VETERANS DAY. This week America recognizes Veteran’s Day. Latinopia is acutely aware that Latinos, throughout American history, have been in forefront of defending our country and, sadly, many have made the ultimate sacrifice. This week Latinopia recognizes some of these veteranos from wars past. Check out the videos on Carmen Contreras Bozak, Erasmo Lopez, Enrique Cervantes and Julian Gonzalez. We thank the many veteranos who were there for all of us.
And don’t forget to scope out Angela Ortiz’s Photo of the Week–this week “Leaving LAX.”
Enjoy your Latinopia week!
