Lots and lots of good stuff this week on Latinopia hermanas y hermanos! We start with Erin Go Bragh! Yep, we’re celebrating St. Patty’s Day with a special jalapeño soda bread recipe to die for. As you know Irish Soda bread is great for complementing that traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner. Well, check out what happens when you add jalapeños in this tasty Latinopia recipe!
Also to celebrate St. Patty’s Day, we post a clip from the hour long documentary about the San Patricio Battalion, a group fo some 300 Irish soldiers in the American army who went over to fight on the side of Mexico during the Mexican American War of 1848. Check out this cool doc by filmmaker Mark Day.
And speaking of filmmakers. Latinopia is proud to introduce Gabriel Carmona and Branden Selman co-founders of NAC Film Theory, a film collective based in Nacogdoches, Texas. This dynamic duo and their collaborators have produced an impressive number of independent films with very little money, proving you can do it if you have the talent and drive. Latinopia will be showcasing the Nac Film Theory films in the coming months. We start this week with Le Flueriste (The Florist) starring Gabriel Gonzalez. Your Tia saw this film and I got to admit, I had to pull out a hankie–te hace llorar!
Also this week Sal Baldenegro returns with his regular blog, Political Salsa Y Más. This week Sal brings us an update on the Migrant Trail, calling attention to the many lives lost in the desert along the U.S./Mexico border. The Migrant Trail literally invites you to walk in the shoes of the immigrant. We’re also reposting Xochitl Julisa Bermejo’s poem homage to the Migrant Trial, “Our Lady of the Water Gallons.”
This week we also have a guest blogger, Dr. Carlos Muñoz Jr. He delivered a speech celebrating Black History month at the University of Massachusetts at Darmouth in February of this year. Latinopia reposts this address, “Victory is in the Struggle.” Lot of history here and advice of our current situation in the United States. Léelo púes!
