SAN PATRICIOS, PEREGRINACIÓN AND MORE!
Hola Latinopians! We celebrate St. Patrick’s day this week with a look at the Irish Mexicano connection. Ever heard of the Mexican architect Juan O’Gorman, Mexican President Alvaro Obregón or actor Anthony Quinn? All are part of the Irish-Mexicano connection–all of Irish and Mexican descent.
In Latino Showcase we post a clip from the film “The San Patricios”by Mark Day. The film tells the story of a battalion of Irish soldiers, the San Patricios as they are known in Mexico, who defected from the United States Army to fight on the side of Mexico during the turbulent Mexican American War. Also to celebrate St. Patrick’s day we repost a cool recipe for Irish Soda bread, This one is special because it Irish soda bread with Mexican jalapenos! Check it out!
As you may know, Latinopia has been busy reshaping the visual look of our videos. Later this week watch for our posting of the first of our new Latinopia videoos. It is an interview with legendary labor and civil right activist Dolores Huerta. Dolores who spoke to Latinopia about the 1966 United Farmworkers Union pilgrimage march from their headquarters in Delano, California to the state capital in Sacramento. This was historic event for many reason, not the least of which was putting the UFW on the national map. The march led to their eventual victory over California grape growers in June of 1970. Check out this cool video about a key event in Latino history in America.
And then is this week’s blogs. Don Felipe returns with another Bravo Road look at doings in New Mexico. Angela Ortiz has a new Photo of the Week and Sergio Hernández returns with another original Arnie and Porfi cartoon and of course there’s Thinking Latina with Sara Inés Calderón and Zombie Mex Dairies.
Enjoy this week on Latinopia!
