CÉSAR CHÁVEZ, DOLORES HUERTA, ENA VALLARDES, REY VILLALOBOS, PORFI AND ARNIE AND MORE THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA!
What up Latinopians! Tia Tenopia here and I’m all excited about the new biopic on farm labor leader and American civil rights icon César Estrada Chávez that was released this week. As you know César left us in 1993. March 31st is César’s birthday (he would have been 87 years old) and it is celebrated with César Chávez Day in California, Colorado and Texas. Here at Latinopia we are celebrating his memory with several videos.
We post a rarely seen video of César speaking only a week before his death at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, Illinois. Check out LATINOPIA EVENT 1993 CHÁVEZ AT NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MEXICAN ART. César speaks out not just about pesticides in the field but also about the importance of art in our lives. Also check out memorable Chávez quotations in CHÁVEZ IN HIS OWN WORDS.
We also have two video interviews with Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers Union. In LATINOPIA EVENT 1968 CHÁVEZ FAST, she recounts the hunger strike Chávez undertook in 1968. Also be sure to watch LATINOPIA EVENT 1966 PEREGRINACION about the farm worker’s march from Delano to Sacramento, California. As also repost our interview with cinematographer Rey Villalobos who tells us what it was like to film at César’s funeral.
AND OF COURSE BE SURE TO GO SEE THE NEW BIO PIC BY DIRECTOR DIEGO LUNA!
On other fronts, Fanny Garcia returns with her blog WHO YOU TALKIN’ TO FANNY? This timer her interview is with women’s reproductive rights activist Ena Suseth Valladares. Here is a woman doing powerful work for Latina women and reminding us that protecting a woman’s reproductive rights should be a concern for all women AND men.
Our regular weekly bloggers return as well. Sergio Hernández who spent a few weeks basking in the Mexican sun and visiting the ancient ruins at Chichen Itza comes back with another Arnie and Porfi cartoon that hints at where Chicano gang signs may have come from. Angela Ortiz has a new photo up on ANGELA’S PHOTO OF THE WEEK: “exposition park,” and we get into the thick of how to block a mind-reading zombie from invading your mind in the latest installment of Zombie Mex Diaries.
Great fun this week on Latinopia. Enjoy!
