CONJUNTO, CONJUNTO, CONJUNTO!
Hey Dudes and Dudas, welcome to another week of loquacious, ‘luminating, lavish, laudable, literate, luscious and legendary Latinopia.com!
Your Tia Tenopia is here with a celebration of CONJUNTO! Yes, this last weekend was the weekend of the San Antonio Conjunto Festival, commandeered, engineered, maestroed and driven by Juan Tejeda – one of the most firme exponents of our cultura in the world! This week-end’s doings in San Anto concluded with a performance by legendary Flaco Jiménez. Alas, not all of us could be at the Conjunto Festival this year, but we can all celebrate it on Latinopia with three rocking videos.
To get the low down on the history of Conjunto, how it started and who the major players are, check out Juan Tejeda’s video on Conjunto Music. We also feature this week a new interview with el maestro himself, in Flaco Jimenez My Start, you’ll find a unique interview with Flaco talking about his father and grandfather and how they influenced his early musical career and how he came to hit on the accordion instead of the guitar for his life work. This is video you’ll only find on Latinopia! Also check out Flaco demonstrating his different musical styles, in Latinopia Music Flaco Jiménez Stylings.
This week-end wass also the week-end of the Reel Rasquachis Film Festival in Boyle Heights. Director Kenneth Castillo was recognized at the Reel Rasquachis for his feature film “Counterpunch.” We showcase his film with a clip in Latinopia Showcase “Counterpunch.” Check it out! All great videos this week on Latinopia!
In our blog section we have a new blogger joining the Latinopia family, Eduardo Díaz. Eduardo resides in Washington, D.C. where he is director of the Smithsonian Institute’s Latino Center. Eduardo will be Latinopia’s eye on what’s happening in the arts y cultura in Washington, D.C. Check out his report on a a new exhibit highlighting the legacy of Central America.
Later in the week, we’ll have new Angela’s Photo of the Week and new Zombie Mex Diaries.
