Hola you irascible, bodacious and awe-inspiring Latinopians! Great art and music this week and sorry for the delay in getting the new videos up–quite a week last week with Diez-y-Seis de September parties–hay, your Tia has to stop with those margaritas! Ooof!
This week, we pay homage to recently passed Chicano art pioneer, activist and great artist Gilbert “Magu” Lujan with a moment from a memorial held in his honor in East Los Angeles on Sunday, September 11th. Many people came out to lay mementos and photos at a Tree of Life that cradled Magu’s remains. There were Aztec ceremonies and many speakers including artist and muralist Wayne Healy who read a poignant Letter to Magu which he composed on hearing of Magu’s passing. We post it here for you to appreciate.
The Latino art world was saddened once again last week with the news that pioneering art historian Dr. Shifra Goldman had passed away. Dr. Goldman was instrumental in preserving the América Tropical mural painted by Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siquieros in Los Angeles in 1932 and later whitewashed. She was also in the forefront of giving respectability and recognitions to Chicano art and artists at a time when they were being ignored. She will be greatly missed by the Latino art community. Memorial services will take place in Los Angeles on October 15th.
This week, that dynamic duo of Joe’s Chemistry returns with a new song, “It’s Been a While” written by Daniel Alvarado Jr. The song is performed by him and fellow band member Raul Callejo. Check out this new generation of musicians!
Bueno, enjoy this week’s videos and be sure to sign up for the newsletter if you haven’t already done so. Besos y abrazos from your Tia Tenopia!
