THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: REMEMBERING HENRY DARROW, MARIO GARCÍA ON THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE EARLY CHICANO MOVEMENT AND BURUNDANGA BORICUA ON CUTBACKS ON SALARIES AND THE PENSIONS OF FACULTY AND STAFF AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO.
This week we are saddened to learn of the passing of the great, Henry Darrow. A star of screen and stage, Henry is perhaps best known for his role as “Manolito” in the TV series High Chapparal. Film scholar and author Frank Berumen give us a considered appreciation of the life and career of this great Puerto Rican actor. Frank has authored several books on Latinos in film and television so he knows his stuff. Thanks Frank for your insights.
Also this week, we bring you more on Mario García’s book, Rewriting the Chicano Movement. In this plática, Mario talks about the essay in the book by Tiffany Jasmin Gonzalez titled Breaking Barriers for Inclusion: Chicanas Running for Public Office and the Chicano/a Civil Rights Movement in Texas.
Lastly, José Umpierre from Puerto Rico gives us his take on the recent cutbacks on the salaries and pensions of employees at the University of Puerto Rico. Until now the salaries and pensions of faculty and staff at the University were paid out of the Common Wealth’s general fund. But the general fund cannot pay what’s been paying before, and so the Junta that is restructuring the Puerto Rican debt is ordering that drastic cutbacks be made. Check out Umpierre’s essay–in Spanish.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
