THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: ALVARO HUERTA ON THE LAST BROWN BERET, LUIS TORRES ON GEORGE SANTOS ANTICS, RICARDO ROMO ON ROLANDO BRISEÑO AND MARK GUERRERO’S EAST L.A. STORIES WITH TOM BRAY.
This week Dr. Alvaro Huerta comments on the release of the new Chicano film The Last Brown Beret, based on the play, The Last Angry Brown Hat. The film was produced, directed and co-starred by veteran actor Del Zamora. At a time when Latinos are the largest ethnic minority in America, they are still under-represented on the big screen. Dr. Huerta argues for the need to support more independent films made by Latinos. He encourages us to join in the go-fund-me campaign for the film at Fundraiser by Del Zamora : Last Brown Beret completion funds (gofundme.com) .
Our regular blogger Luis Torres weighs in on the current antics of George Santos in this parody blog of Santos (or is it Torres?) seeking to fill Diane Feinstein’s soon to be vacant seat.
Ricardo Romo’s Tejano Report dials in a look at the work of master artist Rolando Briseño. The great thing about Ricardo’s posts on art is that he always fills us in on the back story of each of these amazing artists. Check it outalo.
Last but not least, Mark Guerrero’s East Los Angeles Stories returns in an interview with master musician, and trumpet player Tom Bray. Tom’s career includes being a member of East L.A. bands who recorded for major labels, The Evergreen Blues in the late ’60s and Elijah in the early ’70s. He later went on to play with The Electric Flag with Buddy Miles and Michael Bloomfield, Neil Young & the Blue Notes, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Check out the interview!
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
