THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: RAUL SALINAS WITH “HAIL PACHUCO!” ROSE PORTILLO ON THE ORIGINAL ZOOT SUIT PRODUCTION, BURUNDANGA BORICUA ON LA JUNTA AND THE FUTURE OF PUERTO RICO AND SAL BALDENEGRO ON THE RIGHT WAY TO HONOR MARTIN LUTHER KING AND CÉSAR CHÁVEZ.
We continue with our Pachuco theme this week with a rare video courtesy of Michael Sedano. It’s acclaimed activist and poet Raul R. Salinas in an archival reading of his poem “Hail Pachuco” filmed in 1973 at the Flor y Canto Literary Festival convened at the University of Southern California. Also this week we visit with Rose Portillo, one of the stars of the current revival of Luis Valddez’s play Zoot Suit. In the original production of Zoot Suit, Rose portrayed Della, Henry Leyba’s girlfriend. Many years later, in this current production Portillo portrays Della’s mother. Also this week, El Zocotroco assesses the current state of Puerto Rico with recent legislation passed by the Junta of economic advisors who have been empowered to cut back on Puerto Rico’s spending–at the expense of the Puerto Rican people and its institutions. And Sal Baldenegro weighs in on the celebration of Martin Luther King and César Chávez in light of the election of Donald Trump and the draconian measures he has taken.
