This week we celebrate the opening of a new bookstore in Pasadena, California paying homage to celebrated science fiction author Octavia Butler. Nikki High has created Octavia’s Bookshelf, a bookstore featuring the work of Octavia Butler and other authors of color. The opening of the bookstore astounding everyone with a turn out that numbered in the hundreds. Check it out and if you live in he Los Angeles area, of course, visit the new bookstore!
And sticking with the theme of science fiction written by by people of color, we repost conversations with four Latino science fiction authors at the first Conference on Latino Science Fiction convened at the University of California at Riverside. Ernest Hogan, Rosaura Sanchez, Beatrice Pita, Mario Acevedo and Rudy Ch. Garcia all weigh in on science fiction as the new frontier for Latino authors. Check out both of these interview selections.
And last bu not least, Ricardo Romo brings us his latest Tejano Report. This week, in honor of Black history month, he recalls the impact and inspiration that the Rev.Martin Luther King Jr. had on a key generation of Chicano and Chicana activists.
