THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO! IR’ENE SILVA READS THE FLOWER EATER, ANGELINA SAENZ READS EDGECLIFF, RICARDO ROMO ON RUDY TREVIÑO, THE LATE FRANCISCO ALARCÓN ON CINCO DE MAYO AND MIS PENSAMIENTOS WITH ALFREDO SANTOS.
Well, its that time of year again. Yes, Cinco de Mayo time. You’ve probably spotted it because of all the beer, tequila and nacho commercials on TV. We take a look at it from decidedly different point of view. Check out the poem Cinco de Mayo by the late great poet, Francisco Alarcón (1954- 2016). What a truly great poet and what a truly great loss to our community.
And speaking of great poets, we return this week with Ir’ene Lara Silva as she reads the title selection from her new book of poetry, The Flower Eaters. Also Los Angeles -based poet Angelina Saenz reads from her collection of poems, Edgecliff.
Ricardo Romo returns with his Tejano Report. This week he looks at the art of pioneering movement artist Rudy Treviño. Besides being a master artist and co-founder of the early Con Safo art collective, Rudy has spent years teaching at Lanier high school, inspiring new generations of Mexican Americans.
And lastly, we visit with Alfredo Santos and his Mis Pensamientos column from Austin, Texas.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
