THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: OUTRAGE! SAL BALDENEGRO ASKS WHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON? JOSÉ ANGEL GUTIÉRREZ REVIEWS A PARTIAL HISTORY OF VIOLENCE AGAINST LA RAZA, EMILO ZAMORA OFFERS US REFLECTIONS ON UVALDE AND MELINDA PALACIO’S POEM SOMOS ORLANDO.
In the wake of the horrific mass murders in Uvalde, Texas, Latinos nationwide are once again clamoring for gun reform legislation. We’re done with having our people butchered! This week’s Latinopia focuses on these issues.
We begin with Sal Baldenegro asking of Republican legislators blocking anti-assault weapon legislation, Which Side are your On?
Prolific author and social activist José Angel Gutiérrez broadens the discussion with a historical overview in his essay A Partial History of Violence Against La Raza. With his permission we’ve incorporated this essay as a lasting Latinopia Document.
Dr. Emilio Zamora, historian and social activist and his wife Angela Valenzuela visited Uvalde recently and he brings us thoughtful Reflections On Uvalde.
We repost Melinda Palacio’s poem, Somos Orlando, written following the 2016 Orlando Florida nightclub rampage that left 49 people dead, many of them Latinos.
This is a sad time for us at Latinopia. We’ve seen too much senseless death, targeting us! But we will overcome as certain as we know which side we are on.
