THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: BOBBI MURRAY ON ICE ATTACKS, REMEMBERING RUDY ANAYA, SANTA BARRAZA AND KATHY VARGAS WIN PRESTIGIOUS FELLOWSHIPS; KATHY VARGAS AND SANTA BARRAZA IN THEIR ON WORDS.
This week the ICE attacks on the immigrant community America have continued with intensity. Bobbi Murray takes a look at just who these ICE agents are. Have you noticed from television reports how so many appear just to be street thugs in civilian dress covering their faces with masks? Whats all that about? Murray gives you the lowdown in this insightful report.
Also this week we recall with sadness and pride the legacy of one of the founders of Chicano literature in America, Rudolfo “Rudy” Anaya who passed away this week in 2020. We repost here Anaya reflecting on all that he learned during life’s journey. Although a brief five minutes, Rudy packs a wallop on his reflection on the meaning of life and life’s journey.
This week we celebrate a grand victory for two of our most distinguished artists, Texas-based Santa Barraza and Texas photographer Kathy Vargas. Both have been award a $50,000 fellowship prize by the the U.S. Latinx Art Forum in collaboration with the New York Foundation for the Arts. This honor is so well deserved as both artists have a life-long trajectory of doing their art. Ricardo Romo guides us through some of their art pieces in his essay and we compliment it with interviews with each of these two masters. Check out Santa Barraza In Her Own words and Kathy Vargas In Her Own Words.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
