THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: BOBBI MURRAY ON ICE CANCELS SOUTHLAND FOURTH OF JULY, BURUNDANGA BORICUA DEL ZOCOTROCO ON THE ISLAND OF VIEQUES AN AGRICULTURAL PARADISE, RICARDO ROMO’S TEJANO REPORT ON THE LATE ÁNGEL RODRÍGUEZ-DÍAZ AND ALFREDO SANTOS’S PENSAMIENTOS ON THE NO KINGS PROTESTS.
As the ICE raids continue throughout the nation, these raids are having a particularly ominous effect in Southern California. Many communities with large populations of Latinos are cancelling July 4th festivities in fear of ICE raids targeting unsuspecting and loyal citizens who want to celebrate the nation;s birthday. What horrible irony that July 4th, instead of being a celebration of freedom, is now a time of repression where hardworking people can be scooped up off the street, charged with criminality and imprisoned and deported without due process. Bobbi Murray reports from the trenches this week on how ICE repressions are impacting Southern California’s Latino populations.
From Puerto Rico, Jose M. Umpierre, el Zocotroco, reports on the island of Vieques, infamous for being the target of U.S. Navy bombardments in the past, but now thriving as an agricultural paradise. Check out this story and the accompanying photos.
Ricardo Romo’s Tejano Report reviews the stunning art work of the late master Ángel Rodríguez-Díaz. As always, Ricardo fills us in on Angel’s history as well as the prominent art works that took this artist from his home in Texas to the most prestigious galleries in New York.
In spite of the ICE raids try to have a happy Fourth of July.
