THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: ANGELA VALENZUELA ON ALLIGATOR ALCATRAZ, A MONUMENT TO CRUELTY; BOBBI MURRAY ON ICE’S PSYCHOLOGICAL DAMAGE; RICARDO ROMO ON BORDERLANDS ARTIST LUIS LOPEZ AND JOSÉ UMPIERRE ON TRUMP’S BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL’S IMPACT ON PUERTO RICO.
We begin this week with guest blogger Dr. Angela Valenzuela calling our attention to the cruelty of Donald Trump’s vision of creating prisons in the alligator infested Everglades of Florida. As Angela points out, Trump’s Alligator Alcatraz is nothing less than an exercise in blatant cruelty and terror. She notes that it also violates the sanctity of the sovereign Native Miccosukee Tribe in the forefront of protesting how the new prison will impact the local environment.
And speaking of Trump incited terror, Bobbi Murray’s report form the trenches looks at the psychological damage being wrought by ICE agents as they continue their thug-like sweeps of community centers, home depots, car washes, taco stands and other places where Southern California Latinos gather. Many Latinos , documented and not, are staying home and have developed psychological scars from the trauma incited by ICE agents and their terror tactics.
And responding to Donald Trump’s signing of the so-called Big Beautiful Bill, José Umpierre, el Zocotroco, looks at how this bill will add to the burden already being shouldered by Puerto Rico’s citizenry. In spite of the impact that the loss of Medicaid will bring to thousands of Puerto Ricans, El Zocotroco reminds us to continue to conspire for a better Puertorican future. We will now be posting all the Burundanga Boricua articles on Latinopia in Spanish and in English!
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
