THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: RICARDO SÁENZ ON “WHO ARE THE AMERICAN STUDENTS WHO ARE NO LONGER THE MAJORITY?” RICARDO ROMO’S TEJANO REPORT ON THE GILBERT CARDENAS AND DOLORES CARILLO GARCIA ART COLLECTION, ACCLAIMED ARTIST FRANK ROMERO RESPONDS TO “WHAT IS BEAUTY?” AND “WHAT MAKES ART VALUABLE?”
We got lots of art this week. But we begin with sociologist Ricardo Saenz commenting on a recent article in which American students are being characterized as no longer in the majority at schools and universities in the United States. But, Ricardo observes, what the article overlooks is the definition and distinction between what is”American” and what is not. Check out Ricardo’s wise observations.
Ricardo Romo returns with his Tejano Report. This week he looks at a new art exhibit at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center in Austin, Texas. This exhibit showcases the art collection of Gilbert Cardenas and his wife Dolores Carillo Garcia. This impressive collection spans five decades and includes the who’s who of Chicano artists. Check out the visuals on this!
And speaking of artists, we showcase two interviews with acclaimed artist, muralist and philosopher Frank Romero. Frank was a founding member of the Los Four collective which revolutionized Chicano art in the 1970s and included Gilbert Magu Lujan, Carlos Almaraz and Roberto de la Pena. Here Frank reflects on the questiosns of “What is beauty” and “What makes a piece of art valuable?” Check it out.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia.
