THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA:SE NOS FUÉ EL FLACO! RICARDO ROMO ON FLACO JIMENEZ LEGACY, BOBBI MURRAY ON THE LATEST COURT VICTORIES, LATINOPIA VIDEOS FLACO MUSICAL STYLINGS AND FLACO ON “HOW I GOT MY START.”
This week we mourn the loss of a musical legend and musician and performer extraordinaire, Flaco Jimenez (March 11,1939-July 31,2025). Ricardo Romo begins our remembrance with a Tejano Report on Flaco’s lifetime of music making and why he is considered one of the greatest of our Tejano musicians. As Ricardo notes: ” Over a remarkable seven-decade career, he redefined conjunto, Tejano, and Tex-Mex music, earning global acclaim and numerous accolades, including six Grammy Awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He received the National Medal of Arts award in 2022.”
Accompanying Ricardo’s excellent remembrance are two Latinopia videos recorded several years ago. The first one “Flaco Stylings” has Flaco, accompanied by his bajo sexto player, Max Baca, reviewing for us the different musical styles he has pioneered on his Hohner accordion. The other video is a quiet talk with Flaco recalling how he got his start in conjunto music, the influences of his father, and what he strives for when he plays. These are very cool videos you won’t want to miss.
And this week Bobbi Murray returns with another report from the trenches. This week she reviews the recent court ruling by U.S District Judge Maame E. Frimpong ruling that ICE agents cannot arbitrarily swoop down kidnap people without a warrant or specific knowledge that they may be here illegally. As Murray explains, this court ruling which was substantiated by the U.s. 9th District Court of Appeals, has already been violated. This week ICE agents, disguised within a “Trojan horse” Penske rental trucks surprised day laborers seeking work and immediately arrested them. All of this, of course, without due process and in violation of the court mandate.
Wow, this has been one heck of a week on Latinopia!
