This week we got art, literature and Chicano traditions. We begin with Ricardo Romo’s Tejano Report on a new exhibit at the Mitote Gallery which showcases the work of Texas artist Gaspar Enriquez and Bronx=-based artist Scherezade Garcia. We pair this blog with a video interview with Gaspar Enriquez about his work featuring young men and women that he met while teaching at Bowie High School in El Paso, Texas. Also this week, El Profe Quezada remembers a barrio phrase that still has meaning today, “Pobre y con garrote.” How many people have you met to which this applies?
And lastly, we post an interview with Puerto Rican novelist Esmeralda Santiago as she speaks about her novel Las Madres, which looks at the lives of three women in New York on the eve of their departure for Puerto Rico when before Hurricane Maria strikes.
