THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: GREGORIO DAVILA ON UNIDAD: GAY AND LESBIAN LATINOS UNIDOS, RICARDO ROMO’S TEJANO REPORT ON CRYSTAL CITY 1969, LATINOPIA TEATRO ON CRYSTAL CITY 1969 AND A BIOGRAPHY OF JOSÉ ANGEL GUTIÉRREZ.
This week we visit with filmmaker Gregorio Davila whose recent film, UNIDAD Gay and Lesbian Latinos Unidos chronicles the founding of the Gay and Lesbian Latinos Unidos organization (GLLU) in the early 1980s. Davila’s film records a landmark moment in the history of gay and lesbians in American society.
Also this week we celebrate the revival of the play Crystal City 1969 written by David Lozano and Raul Treviño and originally performed on the 30th anniversary of the 1969 high school walkouts in Crystal City, Texas. Ricardo Romo’s Tejano Report reviews the play as it was performed recently at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center in San Antonio, Texas. We pair Ricardo’s review with a video clip of the original cast members performed in 2010 in Dallas, Texas.
Also this week, we post a biography of José Angel Gutiérrez whose activism in coordinating the student walk outs is depicted in the Crystal City play.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia.
