THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: DIANE RODRÍGUEZ APPOINTED TO NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS, RODRÍGUEZ ON LATINO THEATER, POPUL VUH: HEART OF HEAVEN, ENRIQUE’S JOURNEY AND ANGELA’S PHOTO OF THE WEEK.
Hola Latinopians! This week we’re taking a look at the thriving national Latino theater scene. We open with an interview with Diane Rodríguez, Associate Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Center Theater Group. She was recently appointed by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the United States Senate to be a member of the National Council for the Arts. To appreciate why she was selected for this prestigious task, check out our interview with her on the history and state of Latino Theater in America.
Also highlighting Latino theater we post two production videos of recent productions. The first is “Enrique’s Journey,” a play produced by Denver-based Su Teatro, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning narrative by Soñia Nazario. The play tells the story of one young man’s harrowing journey from his native Honduras to the United States. The other video we are showcasing is a recent production by the acclaimed El Teatro Campesino, an adaptation of the ancient Mayan text, The Popul Vuh. Check out these videos and enjoy the cool teatro being produced in the United States.
And of course don’t miss another beautiful Photo of the Week by Angela Ortiz. This week “City Hall.”
Enjoy!
