This week we showcase the music of the jarocho music group Conjunto Hueyapan. The jarocho tradition is hundreds of years old in Mexico. But here in the United States, musicologist Dr. Fermin Herrera has maintain the tradition with members of his musical family. The group Conjunto Hueyapan performs regularly in Southern California venues. We feature the group performing three traditional sones, El Siquisiri, El Ahualulco and El Zapateado.
Also this week, Mark Guerrero’s East L.A. Music Stories returns with an interview with Sal Murillo, lead singer of the ’60s group The Blendells who had a hit in 1964 with “La La La La La.”
Ricardo Romo returns with his Tejano Report. This week he looks at a U.S. census report citing a milestone, the first time that Latinos outnumber Caucasians in the state of Texas. Ricardo puts the statistics in perspective in this Tejano Report.
