THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: REMEMBERING GILBERT “MAGU” LUJAN, BURUNDANGA BORICUA ON LAS TRES CUATRISTAS IN SPANISH AND IN ENGLISH, RICARDO ROMO ON THE ART OF COOKING MEXICAN FOOD AND MARK GUERRERO INTERVIEWS BOBBY NAVARETTE OF TIERRA.
It has been twelve years since we lost the acclaimed artist and muralist and our friend Gilbert “Magu” Lujan. We remember Magu this week with him speaking in his own words about his work and also post his son, Naiche Lujan, talking about Magu’s legacy as found in the world of Magulandia which he invented and on which he worked his whole life.
José M. Umpierre, known to his friends as Gugo, returns with his Burundanga Boricua del Zocotroco. This week he looks at a trio of women musicians who specialize in the “cuatro” instrument. This is a lute-like instrument that has evolved in its own special way and has become the national instrument of Puerto Rico. Gugo’s sly introduction, of course, likens this to an analysis of what makes for love. Of course! We post it in Spanish and in English.
Also this week, Ricardo Romo’s Tejano Report returns. This week he looks at the art of Mexican cooking through the specialties of master chef Pati Jinich. Ricardo points us to some of her cookbooks which emphasize he culinary arts of Mexico.
And lastly, Mark Guerrero’s East L.A. Music Stories returns . This week he looks at the music of saxophonist Bobby Navarette who played with Thee Midnighters and with Tierra at their legendary Carnegie Hall concert. Check out this vintage interview.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
