THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: ESMERALDA SANTIAGO ON PUERTO RICO TODAY, CHARLEY TRUJILLO ON SOLDADOS: CHICANOS IN VIET NAM, JOSÉ UMPIERRE ON THE UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO IN CRISIS AND RICARDO ROMO ON DE ALLA Y DE ACÁ.
Raza, we got lots this week. We begin with Esmeralda Santiago commenting on the second-class status of the citizens of Puerto Rico. Did you know that in Puerto Rico, in addition to paying taxes, you can be drafted and serve in the army but you can’t vote for the President of the United States? Whatever happened to “No taxation without representation?” Check out Esmeralda’s wise words.
Also this week we visit with Viet Nam veteran Charley Trujillo who, in spite of having no formal film training, has made an incredible documentary film Soldados: Chicanos in Viet Nam–the first film about the price Chicanos paid during the Viet Nam war. Check out this important interview and you can scope out the documentary on You Tube, pues.
José Umpierre returns with his Burundanga Boricua blog. This week he looks at the crisis at the University of Puerto Rico’s Recinto de Ciencias Médicas, as the debt crisis continues to be felt throughout the University system.
And last but not least, Ricardo Romo’s Tejano Report looks at the incredible art on display at the Chicano Park Museum in San Diego in the De Alla y de Acá exhibit. Check out the amazing art.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
