THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: RICARDO ROMO’S TEJANO REPORT ON AMALIA MESA-BAINS AND THE ARCHEOLOGY OF MEMORY INSTALLATION AT THE SAN ANTONIO MUSEUM OF ART, ALFREDO SANTOS RETURNS WITH MIS PENSAMIENTOS AND REMEMBERING EL MAESTRO JOSÉ MONTOYA WITH “EL LOUIE” AND “PACHUCO PORTFOLIO.”
This week Ricardo Romo reports on a new installation exhibit by master installation artist Amalia Mesa-Bains. As Ricardo reports, Amalia has been a founding member of the Chicano art movement from its inception, innovating with installation pieces at many different venues and, in the process, being influential in rescuing and popularizing the contributions of Frida Kahlo. Her new installation, Archeology of Memory, is at the San Antonio Museum of Art and runs until January 12, 2025. Check out the selection of pieces that Romo highlights from the exhibit.
Alfredo Santos returns with his monthly La Voz blog, Mis Pensamientos. He reviews current happenings in Austin and other parts of Texas. This week he highlights a new book Movidas by Dr. Maria Eugenia Cotera, a Professor at The University of Texas at Austin.
Last week marked eleven years since the passing of legendary Chicano poet, artist and social activist José Montoya. We remember and honor his contributions to our community with a reprise of José reading from two of his classic poems, “El Louie” and “Pachuco Portfolio.”
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
