THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: BORICUA BURUNDANGA ON HURRICANE MARÍA, A CELEBRATION OF GILBERT “MAGU” LUJAN: NAICHE ON MAGU’S LEGACY, IN SEARCH OF MAGULANDIA, AND MAGU IN HIS OWN VOICE. ALSO SERG HERNÁNDEZ ON TRUMP THROWING TOWELS.
Orale Latinopians! This week we have a special report on the Puerto Rican hurricane María as experienced by our blogger José M. Umpierre. Check out his poignant report on what he experienced. Also don’t forget you can still contribute to the Hurricane relief fund here: https://www.unicefusa.org/donate/support-unicef-usas-hurricane-relief-efforts-puerto-rico/32952?utm_campaign=2017_misc&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=0178/2/_Google&utm_content=maria&ms=cpc_dig_2017_misc_0178/2/_Google_maria&initialms=cpc_dig_2017_misc_0178/2/_Google_maria
This week we celebrate the life of legendary Chicano artist and social activist Gilbert “Magu” Lujan. There are two exhibits currently on display showcasing Magu’s work. Tracking Magulandia on display at the Craig Krull gallery in Santa Monica reviews the Mesoamerican influences of Magu’s work. And the exhibit From Aztlan to Magulandia: The Journey of Chicano Artist Gilbert “Magu” Lujan is on view at the University of California at Irvine’s Contemporary Arts Center Gallery. Both exhibits are mesmerizing. This week we feature a video with Naiche Lujan, Magu’s son, as he reads a poem about his father’s legacy. Also this week we reprise the video In Search of Magulandia, where dozens of artists pay homage to Magu at the Santa Paula Museum of Art and we also showcase a video with Magu talking about his work.
And, of course, our regular cartoon blogger Sergio Hernández weighs in on the current Trump pendejada, Trump Throwing Towels.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
