THIS WEEK ON LATIOPIA: BARBARA’S CARRASCO’S “SIN CENSURA” MURAL, BOBBI MURRAY ON TWO WINS AND SOME HOPE, RICARDO ROMO’S TEJANO REPORT ON TEJANO ART AND ARTISTS AT THE CHEECH, AND EL PROFE QUEZADA ON SIX SAN ANTONIO NOTABLES.
We showcase this week a look at Barbara Carrasco’s epic mural “Sin Censura” which has a long and troubled history. Back in 1981 Carrasco was commissioned to do a mural on Los Angeles. The mural she painted was titled Los Angeles History a Mexican Perspective. But the funder found some of the images and themes controversial and wanted them omitted. Before the could destroy the mural, Carrasco was able to salvage it and put it in storage where it remained until 2001 when the Vera Campbell Foundation awarded a grant which paid for its installation on the ground floor of the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History. Check out this amazing and well wrought mural!
Also this week, Bobbi Murray returns with her report from the trenches. This week she highlights two wins for justice and sanity with passage of a bill that will prevent federal agencies from accessing the information contained in vendor permits and another bill, the No Secret Police Act, that blocks the use by ICE agents of face masks. As Trump continues his onslaught on our freedoms it’s great to know the judges are fighting back!
Ricardo Romo’s Tejano Report centers this week on a new exhibit at the Cheech Museum in Riverside. The new show features the works of twenty-five artists from Texas in a Texas themed exhibit. Really cool stuff.
And El Profe Quezada this week brings us a look at six notables who have contributed to their home town of San Antonio.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
