THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: HAPPY HALLOWEEN! AMALIA MESA BAINS DAY OF THE DEAD, EL PROFE QUEZADA ON DAY OF THE DEAD POEMS, SAL BALDENEGRO ON WE’RE ALL ANTIFA, ALEJANDRO MORALES’ NEW NOVEL PLACE OF THE WHITE HERONS AND RICARDO ROMO’S TEJANO REPORT ON THE ART OF EVA MARENGO SANCHEZ.
Lots of good stuff this week! We begin with that special time of year again, Dia de los Muertos otherwise known as Day of the Dead. We begin with installation artist Amalia Mesa Bains explaining the origins and significance of the tradition in a Latinopia video. Then El Profe Quezada reminds us that there is also the tradition of writing calavera poems dedicated to loved ones, past and present.
Also this week Salomon Baldenegro returns with his Political Salsa y Más. This week he looks at the long American tradition of antifa and how Donald Trump doesn’t know his history. But then what’s new? Check out Sal’s take on the outlawing of Antifa.
Also this week, acclaimed author Alejandro Morales has a new novel. The author of The Brick People, The Rag Doll Plagues, River of Angels and many others has a new novel, The Place of White Herons. The title refers to the ancient Aztec homeland of Aztlan but takes place in a very contemporary Orange County. Check out this novel about a curandera or ilusa who comes into her own as Mexican immigrants return to Aztlan.
Also this week, Ricard Romo’s Tejano report weighs in on the art of Eva Marengo Sanchez.
Do enjoy your week on Latinopia!
