THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA 11.01.24

November 1, 2024 by wpengine

THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: DR. ALVARO HUERTA ON WHY VOTING FOR TRUMP IS IMMORAL, JOSÉ UMPIERRE IN RESPONSE TO RACIST FLOATING ISLAND COMMENT, AND RICARDO ROMO ON A NEW GALLERY IN HONOR OF RICARDO AND HIS WIFE HARRIETT, AND LOS FABULOCOS SING “UNA PURA Y DOS CON SAL.”

This week Dr. Alvaro Huerta gives us his thoughtful reasons on why voting for Donald Trump is immoral. Apart from the many lies Trump has been spreading and the vile racist comments, Huerta goes back to his childhood and early values of right and wrong to look at the morality issues inherent in supporting Trump.

Also this week, Puerto Rico’s José Umpierre responds to the racist joke about Puerto Rico being an island of garbage with an analysis on folks on the island are reacting to the insult. His take on it: let’s see how mainland Puerto Ricans respond to the insult at the ballot box!

Dr. Ricardo Romo reports on big news on the Texas home front. It seems a Historically Black College campus in Texas has decided to honor Ricardo and his wife Harriet by creating a new art gallery in their honor! This is an enormously prestigious honor and none more deserving of it than Ricardo and Harriett. Check it out!

And musically this week, check out the Tex Mex southern California group, Los Fabulocos as they sing “Una pura y dos con sal.”

Enjoy your week on Latinopia!

In this essay, I highlight two Latina artists who held successful art shows in San Antonio, Texas, over the past year. I begin with the renowned textile weaver Consuelo Jimenez Underwood. […]

EL PROFE QUEZADA NOS DICE – THE SIGNIFICANCE OF RETURNING THE CODEX AZCATITLAN TO MEXICO

October 24, 2026 By wpengine

There are moments when history seems to awaken—when something long kept distant finds its way home, carrying with it the breath of ancestors and the weight of memory.  In Mexico City, such a moment has arrived with the return of the Codex Azcatitlan, a treasured Aztec manuscript that has spent nearly two centuries in France.  […]

Where’s the shame? Esos no tienen vergüenza (Those people have no shame). My saintly Nana Petra (she of blessed memory) My Nana would say that of people who were hypocrites, that is, whose actions contradicted their words. Or of people whose behavior was blatantly, knowingly wrong – e.g., starting or spreading hurtful rumors about someone, […]

By Tia Tenopia on March 14, 2011

Jalapeño Irish Soda Bread The sweetness of traditional Irish soda bread ingredients—raisins, buttermilk, some sugar—are richly complimented by jalapeño heat. Here’s a soda bread recipe from Ireland brought to the USA from Galway by Mary Patricia Reilly Murray and later transformed  with her blessing by her daughter, Bobbi Murray, who added jalapeño chile.  A real […]
