THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: WARRIORS – LATINO RECIPIENTS OF THE CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR, SAL BALDENEGRO ON REPUBLICANS AND THE KKK, ALVARO HUERTA’S RUDY AND ME- ODE TO A LEGEND, DON FELIPE ON IN DEFENSE OF AMERICA- MEXICAN AMERICANS, AND ENRIQUE CASTILLO ON WARRIORS.
This week we honor American veterans with a clip from the play Warriors, written and directed by Enrique “Kiki” Castillo. The play that pays homage to Latino recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest award given for bravery in combat. In the accompanying video interview, Latinopia asked the author and director of the play, Enrique “Kiki” Castillo what motivated him to write the play and what he hopes it will accomplish.
We also remember our Latino veteranos with a reprint of an article by the late professor emeritus, historian and Latinopia blogger, Don Felipe De Ortega. Although he passed away in 2018, his voice speaking on behalf of our community is still strong, evidenced by this commentary on how Mexicans and Mexican Americans have defended our nation which Latinopia first published a few months before his death. Don’t miss this thorough and awesome blog.
Also this week, Salomon Baldenegro returns with his Political Salsa y Más blog. This week he looks at how Republican cultists are mimicking the philosophy and racist activism of the KKK. While wearing white robes and donning hoods is too uncomfortable in these days, the Republican cultists personify much of the same beliefs of the KKK. Check out Salomon’s comparisons.
Dr. Alvaro Huerta returns with his Fierce Politics blog. This week he pays homage to legendary Chicano scholar, historian, activist and mentor, Dr. Rudy Acuña. Alvaro reminds us of Rudy’s fifty years of activism and how he has influenced generations of Mexican Americans.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia.
