THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: RICARDO ROMO REMEMBERING A LATINO WWII VETERAN, LUIS TORRES REVIEWS THE BOOK AMERICAN MIDNIGHT BY ADAM HOCHSCHILD, REMEMBERING WORLD WAR TWO VETERANOS CARMEN CONTRERAS BOZAK AND LEONARD FUENTES.
This week we acknowledge Veterans Day with a personal view by Dr. Ricardo Romo whose father fought in World War Two. Also this week we reprise two video profiles of World War Two veterans, Carmen Contreras Bozak and Leonard Fuentes. Both with compelling stories of their experiences as documented by Prof. Maggie Rivas Rodriguez from her Voces website which to date has compiled more than 1,000 interviews with veterans from World War Two, Korea, Vietnam and more recently Iraq and Afghanistan. Here is a link to her website: https://voces.lib.utexas.edu/collections.
Also this week, Luis Torres gives us an insightful review of the book “American Midnight: The Great War, A Violent Peace and Democracy’s Forgotten Crisis,” by Adam Hochschild. Torres reminds us that there is much to be learned from history. In this case, we learn that much of the dangerous events surrounding January 6th, 2020, are not so new. Our nation has witnessed other periods of social unrest in which our Constitutionally guaranteed liberties have been jeopardized, one of them was the period around world War One which has been thoroughly documented in this amazing book. Check this out!
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
