THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: THE REAL FIRST THANKSGIVING IN EL PASO TEJAS, RICARDO ROMO’S TEJANO REPORT ON LATINOS IN THE ECONOMY, BURUNDANGA BORICUA ON OUTRAGEOUS ACTIONS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO AND HOW FLACO JIMENEZ GOT HIS START.
This week we have a spectrum of postings. We begin with a little known fact. History and the media have institutionalized the first Thanksgiving dinner as taking place in 1621 with the Plymouth colony. But in actual fact, the Spanish explorer Juan de Oñate and his company celebrated a Thanksgiving on the banks of the Rio Grande at what is today El Paso, Texas in the year 1598! Check out this article and find out all about this unknown history.
Ricardo Romo’s Tejano Report gives us an insightful overview on how Latinos are being impacted by current shifts in the U.S. economy. Check out Ricardo’s facts and figures and compelling arguments about what is really going on behind the headlines.
El Zocotroco returns with his Burundanga Boricua blog with a look at the latest fiasco going on at the University of Puerto Rico. It seems that for years politicians have been using the University and appointments to further their own political ambitions. Nothing new there. But now a group of principled scholars have drafted a new law 172 which would revamp the committee that governs the University and insulate it from political pressuring so that it will not be subject to the whims of political factions. And guess who is adamantly opposed to this? Yes, of course it’s the President of Puerto Rico’s Legislature, José Luis Damau! Check out the current struggle in this Spanish language report.
And last but not least, listen to Tex Mex legend Flaco Jimenez as he recalls how he got his start. Still going strong after decades o the music scene.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
