THIS WEEK N LATINOPIA: LATINOPIA HERO DR. RICARDO ROMO, BOBBI MURRAY ON CARWASHEROS PRESENTE! TEJANO REPORT ON THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF GRACIELA ITURBIDE AND CONGRESSWOMAN ADELITA GRIJALVA AT THE NO KINGS RALLY.
This week we honor the life contributions of Latinopia blogger Dr. Ricardo Romo. Besides being a regular weekly contributor to Latinopia with his Tejano Report on art and culture, Dr. Romo has a lifelong history of contributions to our community. From starting off as a track star to becoming a scholar and educator and eventually becoming President of the University of Texas at San Antonio where he presided from 1999 to 2017. Read his incredible life trajectory and accomplishments which with a certainty make him a true Latinopia Hero!
Also this week, Bobbi Murray returns with her Report from the Trenches. This week she examines how ICE has targeted not just home depots and taco trucks but also car washes. Murray looks at the CLEAN Carwash Worker Center and the work directed by its leader, Carlos Amador. People are fighting back through a grass roots effort to alert for ICE raids. Check out her eye opening essay.
Also this week, Romo’s Tejano Report centers this week on the photography of Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide. Romo reminds us of the long trajectory of her photography, particularly her work documenting mute Cholas from East Los Angeles’s White Fence gang.
And last but not least, we reprise a video of Congresswoman Adelita Grijalva speaking at Tucson’s No King’s rally in October. This week Grijalva again made headlines when she was accosted by ICE agents who mistreated her in spite of her telling them that she was a United States Congresswoman. Evidently to them all Latinos look alike and deserve the same brutal treatment they hand out to other Latinos. This is what our country has come to: a U.S. Congresswomen being assaulted without any respect for due process or the reign of law and order!
Welcome to this week’s Latinopia!
