THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: RICARDO ROMO ON GREAT BOOKS FOR CHRISTMAS GIFTS, BOBBI MURRAY ON UCLA LAW AND IMMIGRATION PANEL ON ICE RAIDS, EL PROFE QUEZADA NOS DICE ON THE INFLUENCE OF ARAB CULTURE ON THE SPANISH LANGUAGE, AND MARK GUERRERO’S EAST L.A. MUSIC STORIES WITH GUEST SAL RODRIGUEZ OF WAR.
Well, its getting closer and closer to the Christmas holiday celebrated by most Latinos and many non-Latinos. Our cultural ambassador Ricardo Romo brings our attention to five recent books by Latinos that will make excellent holiday gifts, Check out the books and be sure to order early!
Also this week, Bobbi Murray continues with he reports from the trenches. This week she looks at a recent panel convened by the UCLA Center for law and Immigration Policy and reports back their findings pertaining to the immigration sweeps by ICE that have devastated our Latino communities. As she observes, as these sweeps continue so do the heroic defense by activists, scholars and attorneys to combat them. Check it out!
Profe Quezada brings us a fascinating look at the legacy left by the Moors who occupied Spain for more than 800 years and how their culture and language have left a lasting legacy, particularly as it applies to the Spanish language. You gotta read this account of the words and place names Latinos inherited from the presence of the Moors. There’s a reason why we call him “el Profe.”
And Mark Guerrero returns to Latinopia with an interview with drummer Sal Rodriguez who has played, toured, and/or recorded with Eastside Connection, Little Joe Hernandez, El Chicano, Malo, Chuck Negron of Three Dog Night, Tom Jones, and the Duke Ellington orchestra, led by Mercer Ellington. Quite an interview with a legendary musician.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
